Some common questions about coaching & counseling

If your questions about coaching, counseling, and the difference between the two are not answered below, please reach out and ask them!

  • Coaching can take on a variety of different styles, covering topics such as business and leadership, health and wellness, and career to name a few. My work falls into the broad category of life coaching. This means that I support people pursuing a wide range of life goals. My approach to coaching is to join you on your journey. I bring skills and knowledge to help you along the way. I do not set the “destination” but I help you define where you want to go and how you will get there.

  • Coaching is not intended to address clinical mental health needs. A very general guideline is that if you are having difficulty functioning (getting up, eating, going to work, etc.) or are having significant symptoms of illness (thoughts of harming yourself, excessive consumption of alcohol, use of illegal substances, etc.) counseling or therapy is the appropriate resource to help you. Many reasons people go to therapy can also be addressed in coaching. These include dealing with major life transitions, developing a healthier lifestyle, defining or redefining your purpose, etc. Coaching is not the place to address deep wounds such as trauma experienced in childhood or later in life.

  • Yes. Similar to therapy, the coaching relationship is strictly confidential. I will not disclose to anyone that you are a coaching client, nor discuss any details about our coaching sessions.

  • Not likely. Because coaching is not considered a medical service, insurance companies will probably not reimburse you for the fees.

  • Each session is a non-judgmental, semi-structured conversation with the following elements:

    >>The focus of each session is set by you.

    >>We will check in about what you accomplished since the last session.

    >>You will learn and practice tools to better understand yourself.

    >>We will explore strategies to deal with challenges.

    >>You will set achievable goals with incremental steps to you can make the changes you desire.

    >>You will determine what between-session work will be most useful. This helps keep the momentum going, deepen your understanding of yourself, to help practice new ways of thinking/doing/being.

  • I am available for brief questions between our meetings, especially if we meet every other week. Generally, this will be via email but a quick call is okay, too. If you need more support, we may be able to schedule another session sooner than the next one that was planned.
